Why a website?

THE HIBERNIAN INDEPENDENT

Volume One. Number Fifteen. November 16, 2023

More than an email. Less than a newspaper. In your email box the first and third Thursday of every month. Published by The Portland Hibernian Society.

Why a website?

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a website where you could check in on our local Irish community; find out what’s happening, who’s meeting when, what’s playing where, who’s saying what and even catch up on some of the news from Ireland?

Well, now there is.

            Portlandhiberniansociety.org

With valuable technical assistance from Mike Phillips and Holly Griffith, the PHS has assembled a website that aspires to answer the above needs and interests. We’ll let our website speak for itself. It’s a work in progress. Don’t be surprised if you’re asked if you can contribute content. As Nora Ephron famously said, “Everything is copy.” Check it out, why don’t you?

Without the support of our dues-paying members (you know who you are) this wouldn’t be possible. Go raibh maith agat.

SAVE THE DATES - DECEMBER 2 AND DECEMBER 13

The First Annual PHS Nollaig Shona Dhuit lunch will be in Kells Restaurant Saturday December 2 at Noon. This will be all about celebrating the Christmas season, renewing friendships and looking forward to 2024.

The Fifteenth Anniversary of the dedication of the Oregon Potato Famine Memorial at Mount Calvary Cemetery will be held at 11 A.M. on Wednesday, December 13. Tim Birr with bagpipes and Fr. Jim Galluzzo with a blessing will be on hand. Mary McAleese, the President of Ireland,  spoke at the dedication in 2008.*

OTHER IRISH ORGS. OTHER LUNCHES.

It’s a testament to the growth of an active, organized Irish diaspora in Portland that there will be two other holiday gatherings the same weekend in early December.

Irish Network Portland is hosting the INP Holiday Party 2023 on Friday, December 1. Kells Ballroom. This event is $20 to subscribed INP members and $40 to non members.

Portland’s longest-established Irish interest group, the All Ireland Cultural Society, has a lunch scheduled for Sunday, December 3. Old Spaghetti Factory, 715 S. Bancroft St., Portland, 1-3 pm. No-host bar will start at 1 pm, with meals served around 1:30 pm. $30 for AICS members and $35 for non-members.

IT’S BEEN SEVEN YEARS FOR T.C. O'LEARYS. NO ITCH.

Seems like just the other day that Dubliner Tom O’Leary opened his little Irish pub on NE Alberta St. What Tom’s got planned for a celebration can be called just one thing: A BASH.  Friday, November 24th 4pm - close. Featuring live music, raffles, food and drink specials, and an all-round fantastic time! A portion of the proceeds from the day will be delivered to the Kelly family and their lasting tribute in memory of dear Susannah. Beyond raising money to help with the medical debts, funds will be donated to honor Susannah’s legacy of supporting emerging artists.

THE BOYS IN THE NYPD CHOIR WERE SINGING GALWAY BAY.

That familiar refrain from one of the best-loved Christmas songs EVER,  Fairy Tale of New York , came true the other day. A group of retired Irish American NYPD officers gathered to pay tribute to The Pogues.

MICHAEL FLATLEY BATTLING CANCER

But it hasn’t slowed down the 65-year old. The Chicago-born star, a former Irish dancing world champion, has remained hands-on with his Lord of the Dance tours and is in talks about a possible residency in Las Vegas.

CLIMBING CROAGH PATRICK

The HI has covered Ireland’s holiest mountain before. If making it to the top like hundreds of thousands of pilgrims is on your bucket list ,you’re in luck. The climb will be easier by February of next year.

*MARY MC ALEESE ON BEING IRISH IN AMERICA

"The immigrant's heart marches to the beat of two quite different drums, one from the old homeland and the other from the new. The immigrant has to bridge these two worlds, living comfortably in the new and bringing the best of his or her ancient identity and heritage to bear on life in an adopted homeland."

Mary McAleese served as President from 1997 to 2011.
