MEET MAYOR MC CORMICK

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 22 - KELLS RESTAURANT - 6 P.M. DINNER 7 P.M. MEETING/PRESENTATION

As Portland voters prepare to elect Mayor Number 54, we’ll do a deep dive on Mayor Number 10 - Stephen James McCormick WHO WAS BORN IN DUBLIN AND WASN'T 30 YET when elected in 1859. How, you ask, could this Irish Catholic, one-time seminarian succeed politically in Protestant Portland? McCormick - immigrant, pioneer, politician and ever Irish - didn’t just succeed, he thrived here with the support of the local Irish community. Hibernian David O’Longaigh made the trip from Dublin to Portland 140 years after Mayor McCormick. Fascinated by the former mayor,  David's done tons of research and will share stories and insights and archival information about Mayor Number Ten. FEBRUARY MEETING - THURSDAY FEB. 22 - SIX P.M. SAINT BRIGID AND IRELAND

Here’s a reminder of how the legend of Saint Brigid is so much a part of Catholic tradition in Ireland.

A RELIC of St Brigid has today returned to Co. Kildare as the county prepares to mark 1,500 years since the death of one of Ireland's patron saints. Addressing those gathered at today's Mass, Fr Denis McNulty said: "In many ways if Capernaum was the home city of Jesus, Kildare is the home place of St Brigid and today we have brought her home.”

ONE STOP IRISH IMMERSION

If you attend Féile Portland the weekend of Feb. 16 at PCC Sylvania you’ll marvel at how many people in Greater Portland cherish their Irish heritage and honor its traditions.

STAGE IS SET FOR SPEAR

Corrib Theater, Portland’s Irish-forward contribution to keeping the culture current, presents SPEAR by County Louth playwright C.N. Smith beginning February 16.

Sean, Nate and Joe are having a drink-up in an open field.  The craic gets real. “Spear is a play about race, mediocrity, and misunderstanding,” says Smith of his work, which was part of the 2022 Dublin Fringe Festival. Spear runs from Feb. 16 to Mar. 10.

EIRE AHOY

Spring forward on March 10 with the Shamrock Cruise on the Willamette River. Anne Doherty and Sam Keaton do a great job with this every March. Watch the Willamette River flow.
