NUNS, KNOW NOTHINGS AND THE KKK IN OREGON.

Oregon voters passed a ballot measure in November 1922 that would shut down all private schools and force all students to attend public schools. People today ask, "Really?" Yep. It’s a hell of a story! By the way, if you’d like to be a card-carrying member of The Portland Hibernian Society, bring $35 and you’ll get your card. SPECIAL GUEST TONIGHT - From Limivaddy in the north of Ireland - Sean McGuigan.

IRISH TEAM TRIVIA. Save the date: October 13. We’ll be taking over Kells Restaurant for a night of intense Irish trivia.

Can you and three friends them up to tackle some vexing questions about the Irish and Irish-American experience? …Details tonight.

HOW THE FAMINE MEMORIAL CROSS AT MT. CALVARY CAME TO BE. It was 15 years ago that what was then the E.H. Deery Division of the AOH dedicated the Oregon Famine Memorial. David O’Longaigh will she the Saga of The Cross at our October meeting on October 19. Featured: Rare archival video from Ireland where the Cross was sculpted.

THIS WORLD CUP IS ABOUT MORE THAN RUGBY. Ireland’s ranked number one in the world in rugby. This is a big deal. You can watch Ireland play South Africa this Saturday and Scotland next Saturday. Both games at Noon. Try Kells Downtown. Kells Brewery on NW 21st or T.C. O’Learys. (Just don’t ask anyone at the bar to explain the game.)

WHAT A WAY TO EXPERIENCE IRELAND NEXT SUMMER. See Galway. See Dublin. See plays. Meet the writers and actors. Gemma Whelan of Corrib Theater is signing folks up for next summer’s tour right now. And there’s never been a better time to sing up for this season at Corrib, which starts next month.

AND NOW, THE NEWS FROM IRELAND YOU MIGHT FIND INTERESTING, INFORMATIVE OR AMUSING. But William Butler Yeats never said that. And, certainly didn’t write that. The Nobel poet is misquoted on the participant medals given out to 25,000 runners who ran the Dublin Marathon.. BILLIONS - Because some of the biggest tech firms on earth have a presence in Ireland - Meta, Google, Airbnb, Twitter er X -  massive budget surpluses are accruing. What’s the Dail going to do with all that money? This is a pretty interesting dilemma. (Warning: BBC coverage of Ireland.) UGLY OPENING DAY - Political hooligans - an estimated 200 of them - made life very uncomfortable for members of the Irish congress in Dublin aka the Dail. “They were protesting against various issues including immigration, Covid-19 vaccines, transgender rights, sex education in schools and proposed hate-speech laws.” - The Irish Times. Acc to one report, “Protesters were heard chanting “You’ll never beat the Irish.” KNOW NOTHINGS NEVER GO AWAY. Ah, the farm life I never got to live in Ireland. Where they compete to see who can throw their wellys farthest. Really.
