As Portland voters prepare to elect Mayor Number 54, we’ll do a deep dive on Mayor Number 10 - Stephen James McCormick WHO WAS BORN IN DUBLIN AND WASN'T 30 YET when elected in 1859. How, you ask, could this Irish Catholic, one-time seminarian succeed politically in Protestant Portland? McCormick - immigrant, pioneer, politician and ever Irish - didn’t just succeed, he thrived here with the support of the local Irish community. Hibernian David O’Longaigh made the trip from Dublin to Portland 140 years after Mayor McCormick.
