Remembering Denny Codd

Longtime Portland Hibernian Denny Codd passed away in October. A funeral mass was held on Nov, 8 at Saint Clare Church in Southwest Portland where Denny was an active parishioner.

Born in Spokane in 1940, he was a proud graduate of Gonzaga University, Class of 1962. He spent five years with the Jesuits before embarking upon a teaching, coaching and counseling career that brought him to Jesuit High School in Portland in 1977.

Father Jim Galluzzo spoke in his eulogy for Denny of a man who loved his family, loved his Church, loved being Irish and loved Gonzaga basketball.

He was a regular guest at the Galluzzo home where Jim’s mother (“from County Cork”) would always have him say Grace because, “As an Irishman he got to give the blessing before dinner,” said Fr. Galluzzo.

Denny was one of the earliest members of the E.H. Deery Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and was a generous supporter of our cause until very recently.

He was known among friends and family for his even disposition and  constant admonition that, ”All shall be well,” according to Fr. Galluzzo.

Denny is survived by his brother Joe, his wife of 52 years Joan, his daughter, two grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
