Ireland’s local Consul General at Kells

Micheál Smith, from County Armagh, is Ireland's Consul General to the Western United States.

Portland Welcomes Ireland's West Coast Consul General Micheal Smith - He wasn’t the first visitor born in Ireland to notice the similarities between the weather there and here in Oregon on a grey, overcast midsummer day. But this wasn’t just any Irish tourist. Micheal (me-haul) Smith is the official representative of the Republic of Ireland for the US West Coast. Highlights of his visit on July 10 and 11 included visits to the Oregon Famine Memorial and a lively session at Kells. He also met with Tim Boyle at Columbia Sportswear and with Mayor Ted wheeler at Portland City Hall. Consul General Smith made some news while visiting Portland:  It’s early days yet, but he urged those at Kells to think about forming a sister city relationship with a city in Ireland. Many thanks to Brian Doherty and the folks at Irish Network Portland for arranging this important visit.

A Portland sister city in Ireland? As near as I can tell, it’s a blank whiteboard when it comes to suggestions for a potential Portland sister city in Ireland. (PHS Treasurer Tim Hennessy will lead the Waterford campaign. I'll be pulling for a city or town in County Donegal.)

TRIVIA - Which city or town in Oregon has a Sister City relationship with a city or town of the same name in Ireland?
